The purpose and meaning of the breed standard are the main topics of this lecture. Louis is a writer who has published an interesting and very comprehensive book about the German Shepherd. In this video, you can listen to his opinions on the modern type of this breed that can be seen today, and, conversely, in his opinion, the ideal type of GSD that existed in the past. He points out that the GSD is already overbred and too angular, and its movement characteristics are therefore limited. In the presentation, you will learn about the history of shows, the birth of the standard for dogs, pedigree, and the beginnings of judging by judges.

The lecture “The value of the breed standard today” with Louis Donald was recorded at the German Shepherd Dog Week in Lerma / Spain 2023 for the World Union for German Shepherd Dogs (WUSV). The organizer of the 3rd World Congress for German Shepherd Dogs was the Real CEPPA. The motto was “Quality breeding of the German Shepherd Dog” and was aimed at lovers, athletes and breeders of the German Shepherd Dog as well as veterinarians and officials. On this website in the GSD Masterclass category you will find all lectures from WUSV Lerma program in the areas of general, breeding & genetics, sport, law and WUSV.

Louis has been involved with German Shepherd Dogs for over 60 years.

He started in the breed in 1962 at the age of 15, and by age 17, he was elected to his first official appointment as Vice President of the Canberra Non-Sporting and Working Dog Club. At 18, he was the club’s chief obedience training instructor, and at 20, its President. Louis has been a successful German Shepherd Dog breeder, handler, judge’s training lecturer and examiner, breed surveyor, WUSV Continental Director, and a member of the SV since 1972.

Louis became a fully licensed ANKC working dog judge in 1974 and completed his exams in Germany in 1978 to become Australia’s first fully licensed SV German Shepherd Dog Judge, and at that time, the youngest fully listed SV breed judge in the world.

He was elected President of the German Shepherd Dog Council of Australia at age 26, a position he held unopposed for approximately 20 years. During that period, he either initiated or oversaw virtually all the major breed improvement schemes now in use by the German Shepherd Dog Council throughout Australia, and for many years, he was the senior judge at the GSDCA Sieger (MBS) Shows judging the Open Dogs.

Louis is both an acknowledged lecturer on German Shepherd Dogs and published author. He has written many articles on the German Shepherd Dog, which have been published in a number of countries and translated into many languages. He is also the official reporter and photographer for Europe’s largest dog magazine at the German and Italian Sieger Shows.

His overseas appointments have included England where he judged the English National, South Africa, India, Philippines, New Zealand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Iceland.
