The role of the judges – Margit van Dorssen, a long-time judge and breeder of German Shepherds (kennel von Arlett), gives a lecture on the correct referee code. She emphasizes that the show ends with a ceremony and not before. The best behavior should be maintained until the end. Referee candidates are a picture of the whole club – organization. In her opinion, judges must communicate well with people and present their assessments effectively. She also sees the experience of the judge as a breeder as important so that they can interpret the goals of the breed well. The judge should be self-confident enough, objectively critical, but also empathetic. Margit delivers a truly great presentation – concise, empathetic, and rich in information thanks to her extensive experience.

The lecture with Margit van Dorssen was recorded at the German Shepherd Dog Week in Lerma / Spain 2023 for the World Union for German Shepherd Dogs (WUSV). The organizer of the 3rd World Congress for German Shepherd Dogs was the Real CEPPA. The motto was “Quality breeding of the German Shepherd Dog” and was aimed at lovers, athletes and breeders of the German Shepherd Dog as well as veterinarians and officials. On this website in the GSD Masterclass category you will find all lectures from WUSV Lerma program in the areas of general, breeding & genetics, sport, law and WUSV.

Margit van Dorssen

My name is Margit van Dorssen and I live in Cologne – Germany. I am married and have one daughter.
I have been breeding German Shepherd Dogs for 45 years under the kennel name „von Arlett“. During my work as a trainer and dog handler I attached great importance to – whenever possible – presenting my own dogs during the competitions they took part in.

In 1996, I begann my career as a breeding judge for German Shepherd Dogs.

I have always been interested in the more universal aspects of German Shepherd Dogs in trial and breeding. My work of recent years was focussed on the encouragement and motivation of young dog handlers.
My basic philosophy aims at breeding dogs with excellent structures who can also be used as working dogs. In the breeding programm of the „von Arlett“ kennel, dogs of grey and also black coat color are frequently used. Winner of universal shows who participated in national and international events were the „fruit“ of my kennel.

Since 1978 I have been active as a breeder for German Shepherd Dogs, with 383 litters.
1996 Appointment as breeding judge – since that time I judged approximately on 400 national and international shows – twice on the occasion of the BSZ Conformation Show.
In 2001, I was appointed as Breed Survey Master and ever since I evaluated 106 breed survey competitions in Germany and at a world wide level.

I judged Siegerschauen in about 25 different countries. In 2017, I had the honor to judge German Shepherd Dogs on the occasion of the World Dog Show in Leipzig to which a total of 31,000 dogs of all kind of breeds were registered.

Dogs with ranking VA from the „von Arlett“ kennel on
German Siegerschauen:
Ulk, Huppy, Ghandi, Peperoni

27 progeny groups from „von Arlett“- fathers on German Siegerschauen (Agent, Joker, Ulk, Flick, Nicco, Huppy, Rickor, Ghandi, Flipp)

Breeding Groups „von Arlett“: participation 14 times, 2 times 2. place, 3 times 3. place, as well as one time the second place and one time the third place with my group of grey coat color.
In 1997 I was the head of organization of the BSZ Conformation Show which obtained a record number of registrations.
